It usually starts on a July afternoon: the thermostat creeps past 78, the vents blow air that's cool-ish at best, and the air handler closet shows frost on the copper line or water spilling from the pan. Maybe the last tech “topped it off” in spring. Refrigerant isn't used up like gas in a car. If the charge is low, it leaked, and it will keep leaking until someone finds where.

Brothers Services Cooling & Heating handles refrigerant leak repair in Venice, FL the way Goran would want it done on his own house: find the leak, fix it, then charge it. When a frozen coil turns out to be an airflow problem — a clogged filter, weak blower or collapsed duct — we say so and treat it as a regular AC repair instead of a pricier refrigerant job.

Warning signs

Signs of a refrigerant leak or a freezing coil

A leak rarely leaves a puddle. These are the clues we look for when a homeowner calls about warm air or ice.

  • Ice on the suction line

When charge drops, evaporator pressure falls, the coil slides below 32°F and moisture freezes onto it. Frost creeps along the larger insulated copper line until airflow is nearly blocked and cooling stops.

  • Hissing near a joint or valve

A larger leak at a brazed joint, service port or Schrader valve can hiss audibly while the compressor runs.

  • Oily residue at flare fittings

Refrigerant carries compressor oil with it. Where it escapes — mini-split flare nuts, service valves, valve cores — it leaves a dark, dust-catching smudge.

  • Formicary corrosion pinholes

Copper evaporator coils in Florida can develop tiny branching tunnels from organic acids that concentrate in damp air handler closets. The leaks are microscopic and scattered, so coil replacement is sometimes the honest answer instead of patching.

  • Long run times and warm supply air

An undercharged system moves less heat, so it runs longer and the vents deliver air only a few degrees cooler than the return. Left alone, the compressor runs hot and can trip on its internal overload.

How we work

How we find and fix the leak

We follow the same order every time, because skipping steps is how people pay for refrigerant twice.

Technician using an electronic leak detector on AC refrigerant lines in Venice, FL
  1. 1

    Thaw and check airflow

We let a frozen coil thaw, then check the filter, blower wheel and coil face. A frozen coil with a full charge is an airflow problem, and we won't sell refrigerant for it.

  2. 2

    Measure the charge

Gauges show suction and liquid pressures, superheat and subcooling, read against your metering device — TXV or piston.

  3. 3

    Pinpoint the leak

An electronic detector sweeps coils, lines and valves, and bubble solution confirms the exact spot. Stubborn leaks get isolated and pressure-tested with dry nitrogen.

  4. 4

    Repair and verify

That could mean a new valve core, a re-brazed joint, a fresh flare fitting or a replacement coil, followed by a nitrogen pressure test and a deep vacuum to pull out moisture.

  5. 5

    Charge accurately

We weigh in the correct refrigerant, fine-tune by superheat or subcooling and confirm supply-air temperature before leaving.

Honest pricing

What affects leak repair cost

Every leak is different, so we walk you through these variables first.

Leak location
A valve core at the service port is quick; a pinhole inside an evaporator in a tight closet is not.
Refrigerant type and amount
Reclaimed R-22 costs far more per pound than R-410A, and bigger systems hold more charge.
Repair or replacement part
Brazing one joint is a different job from replacing a corroded coil or an attic line set.
System age
On equipment near the end of its life, we may suggest putting the money toward replacement instead.

Before any repair begins, you get a written price covering parts, labor and refrigerant.

R-22, R-410A or R-454B: choosing a path for older systems

Plenty of homes in South Venice and Venice Gardens still run pre-2010 equipment charged with R-22. Production ended January 1, 2020, so any R-22 used today is reclaimed or stockpiled, which makes a major leak repair on an aging R-22 unit a harder sell. R-410A systems remain fully serviceable, while most new split systems installed from 2026 on use lower-GWP R-454B or R-32. When replacement wins, our AC installation page explains how we size the new system, and our R-22 phase-out guide covers the decision in depth.

Why coils corrode faster on the Gulf Coast

Indoor coils sit in a cabinet that stays wet most of the year, and outdoor coils near the water breathe salt, so leaks are simply more common here than in drier climates. Near the beach, salt-air coil protection slows outdoor damage; indoors, humidity control keeps the air handler closet drier and friendlier to copper.

Why Brothers Services

Why choose Brothers Services for refrigerant leak repair

Estimates are free and written up front, with the repair, the refrigerant and the labor on separate lines. As Margo B. wrote in her review, “All parts & labor were clearly disclosed with honesty.”

  • Straight talk on R-22 equipment

With 5 years in the HVAC industry and a Florida Certified A/C Contractor (CAC) license, we'll tell you when an older R-22 system isn't worth another pound of reclaimed refrigerant, and lay the repair and replacement numbers side by side.

  • A 24/7 line for iced-over systems

Frozen suction lines tend to show up in the evening after a long day of runtime. Call (831) 461-3437 at any hour; same-day visits are common when you reach us early.

FAQ

Refrigerant Leak & Frozen Coil Repair FAQs — Venice, FL

Can you just add refrigerant to get me through the summer?

Sometimes, as a stopgap, but the leak is still there and the charge will drop again. A system that needs refrigerant has a leak, so we prefer to repair it and charge once. If the leak is tiny and the system is close to retirement, a top-off can be a reasonable bridge, and we'll talk through that trade-off honestly.

Why does my AC keep freezing up?

Usually it's low refrigerant or restricted airflow. Low charge drops coil temperature below freezing; a clogged filter, dirty coil, weak blower motor or closed-off vents do the same thing from the airflow side. We check airflow first because it's often the cheaper fix, then measure the charge to confirm what's really going on.

Can I put R-410A or R-454B in my R-22 system?

No. These refrigerants run at different pressures and use different oils, so neither is a drop-in replacement. Converting usually means a new outdoor unit, a new indoor coil and often a new line set, which is effectively a new system. We'll lay out repair and replacement side by side so you can compare.

Is a leak repair worth it on a 12-year-old system?

It depends on the leak and everything around it. A bad valve core on a healthy R-410A system is well worth fixing. A corroded evaporator paired with a tired, noisy compressor is a different conversation. We'll give you an honest read on remaining life and let you make the call.

Do AC stop-leak sealers actually work?

They can plug a tiny pinhole for a while, but the same chemistry that seals a leak can gum up a TXV, a piston orifice or the fine passages inside a mini-split. Sealant in the system can also contaminate recovery equipment and gauges. We'd rather find the leak and fix it properly. If someone already added a sealer to your system, tell us before we connect our gauges.

Is a refrigerant leak dangerous to my family?

Household refrigerants like R-410A are low in toxicity, and a slow leak in a ventilated home isn't a breathing hazard in normal amounts. Newer R-454B systems use a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant and are built with leak-detection safeguards. The bigger risk is to the equipment, since low charge overheats the compressor. If you hear loud hissing indoors or feel dizzy near the air handler, open windows, shut the system off and call (831) 461-3437.

How long does it take to find and fix a refrigerant leak?

A leak at a service port or valve core is often found and fixed in one visit. A pinhole inside an evaporator coil, or in a line set hidden in a wall, can need a standing nitrogen test and a return trip, and a coil replacement depends on part availability. After the first round of testing we tell you which situation you're in, before you approve anything.
