Sometimes the AC doesn't die; it just stops winning. The thermostat is set to 76 and the house sits at 81 all afternoon while the system runs for hours without cycling off. On the Gulf Coast, where summer highs average around 91°F and nights barely drop below 75, a slightly compromised system can't catch up.

When your AC is not cooling in Venice FL, there's usually one specific cause, sometimes two stacked together: a weak capacitor, a condenser coil matted with love bugs and oak pollen, a slow refrigerant leak, or a clogged filter freezing the evaporator. Our job is to find which, prove it and fix that, rather than topping off refrigerant and hoping.

If the outdoor unit is completely dead or water is on the floor, treat it as an emergency AC repair.

Warning signs

The usual reasons an AC runs but won't cool

These are the causes we find most often, roughly in the order we check them.

  • Clogged air filter

A filter packed with dust and pet hair chokes airflow across the evaporator. Cooling drops first; left long enough, the coil freezes.

  • Failed capacitor

If the outdoor fan runs but the compressor doesn't, or the reverse, a run capacitor below its rated microfarads is the top suspect.

  • Pitted contactor

Lightning surges and years of arcing pit the relay that powers the condenser, causing chattering or a unit that won't start.

  • Dirty coils

Outdoor coils clog with grass clippings, love bugs and dryer lint; indoor coils collect dust the filter missed. Both cut capacity.

  • Low refrigerant from a leak

Refrigerant isn't consumed, so low charge means a leak, often formicary corrosion in a copper evaporator. It shows up as low suction pressure and high superheat.

  • Frozen evaporator coil

Ice on the coil or suction line means airflow or charge is off. Let it thaw, then find out why it froze.

  • Tripped float switch

A clogged condensate drain lifts the float switch and cuts power to the condenser while the blower keeps moving room-temperature air.

How we work

How we diagnose a warm-air problem

We work through the system in order, so nothing is skipped and nothing is guessed.

Clogged air filter restricting airflow on an AC not cooling in Venice, FL
  1. 1

    Start with the basics

Thermostat settings and wiring, filter condition, breaker and disconnect, and whether the float switch has tripped.

  2. 2

    Test the electrical side

Capacitor readings against rating, contactor condition and voltage, and amp draw on the compressor and condenser fan.

  3. 3

    Check airflow

Temperature drop across the evaporator, static pressure, blower wheel condition, and closed or blocked return grilles.

  4. 4

    Read the refrigerant side

Suction and liquid pressures, with superheat and subcooling, tell us whether the charge is right and the metering device is working. If the charge is low, we look for the leak instead of just adding more.

  5. 5

    Repair and confirm

Once the fault is fixed, we measure the temperature drop again and let the system run long enough to confirm it's pulling the house down.

Honest pricing

What determines the repair cost

The cost depends entirely on what we find, which is why we diagnose before quoting.

The root cause
A capacitor, contactor or float switch is a modest repair; a leak search or coil replacement is a larger job.
Refrigerant type and amount
R-410A recharges cost less than R-22, now available only as reclaimed refrigerant.
Coil cleaning scope
A condenser rinse is quick; a soiled evaporator takes longer.
Leak location
A leaking valve core is a simple fix; pinholes inside the evaporator often mean coil replacement.
Stacked problems
A coil frozen by a clogged filter on a system that's also low on charge takes more than one fix.

After diagnosis you'll get a written price for the repair, and no work begins until you've approved it.

Checks you can do before calling

  • Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool, the fan is on Auto and the batteries aren't low.
  • Pull the air filter. If you can't see light through it, replace it.
  • Look at the outdoor unit. The fan and compressor should both be running, and air leaving the top should feel warm.
  • Check around the air handler for a full drain pan or water near the float switch.
  • If you see ice anywhere, turn cooling off and run the fan alone for a couple of hours to thaw it.

Our guide to the common causes of an AC blowing warm air goes deeper, and our post on stopping a clogged AC drain line covers float-switch shutdowns.

Older block homes that never quite cool down

In older CBS homes in South Venice and Venice Gardens, a system that seems not to cool may be fighting leaky original attic ductwork or undersized returns. When the equipment tests fine but the house won't come down, we check duct leakage and return sizing.

When not cooling points to a bigger problem

If the charge is low, our refrigerant leak and frozen coil repair finds the leak before anything is recharged. If the compressor tests weak, we'll talk through compressor replacement options. And if the system is old, on R-22 and failing in several places, it's fair to price a new, right-sized AC alongside the repair.

Why Brothers Services

Why choose Brothers Services when your AC is not cooling

  • Readings first, refrigerant last

We don't open a jug of refrigerant as a first move. You see the gauge readings or the failed part before we recommend a repair, and a top-off is never sold as a fix for a leak.

  • Help on the phone before the truck rolls

Goran or the crew will walk you through the filter, thermostat and float switch checks. If a five-minute fix gets the air cold again, you've saved the cost of a visit.

  • Fast, fair and tidy

Fabio L. had us service both his home and his business and called the work super fast, fairly priced and clean. Our 22 five-star Google reviews read much the same.

  • Licensed, with the price agreed first

We hold a Florida Certified A/C Contractor (CAC) license, estimates on HVAC work are free, and no repair starts until you've approved the written number.

FAQ

AC Not Cooling Repair FAQs — Venice, FL

Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?

The most common causes are a clogged filter, a failed capacitor, a dirty condenser coil, low refrigerant from a leak or a frozen evaporator coil. A tripped float switch can also shut down the outdoor unit while the indoor blower keeps running. Each needs a different fix, which is why testing beats guessing.

Can I just have refrigerant added?

Refrigerant doesn't get used up. If a system is low, it's leaking, and adding more without fixing the leak means paying for refrigerant again next season. Overcharging a system that wasn't actually low is worse, because it raises head pressure and strains the compressor. We confirm the charge with superheat and subcooling readings before recommending anything.

My AC cools fine at night but can't keep up in the afternoon. Is that normal?

A healthy, properly sized system in Southwest Florida should hold close to setpoint on a typical summer day. If the house drifts five or more degrees above setpoint every afternoon, something is limiting capacity: dirty coils, low charge, a weak capacitor, attic duct leaks or an undersized unit. It's worth a diagnostic visit before the hottest weeks arrive.

How long should I let a frozen AC thaw?

Turn cooling off and set the fan to On. Most coils thaw in two to four hours, though heavy ice can take longer. Put towels near the air handler in case the drain pan overflows as it melts. Once it's thawed, the system still needs a diagnosis, because whatever caused the freeze, whether airflow or refrigerant, hasn't gone away.

How much colder than room air should my AC vents blow?

Most technicians look for supply air roughly 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the air entering the return grille, measured after the system has run for several minutes. Very humid days can narrow that split because the coil is busy removing moisture. A reading well below that range points to low charge, a dirty coil or a weak compressor, while an unusually wide split can mean restricted airflow. We measure it on every not-cooling call.

Can a thermostat problem make the AC stop cooling?

Yes, more often than people expect. Weak batteries, a fan left on On instead of Auto, a loose cooling wire at the sub-base, or a smart thermostat losing power without a common wire can all leave the house warm while the equipment itself is fine. A thermostat mounted where afternoon sun hits it can also misread the room. We check the thermostat call before blaming anything outdoors.

Why is one room warm when the rest of the house cools fine?

That's almost always an air delivery problem rather than a refrigerant one. A crushed or disconnected flex duct in the attic, a closed or stuck damper, a register blocked by furniture, or a bedroom with no return path when the door is shut can each starve a single room. We check airflow at that register and trace the duct. If the room was never on the duct plan, a ductless mini-split may be the cleaner fix.
